Hvammstangi is the largest community in West Húnaþing whose history as a trading centre dates back over more than 100 years. If you would like to see how people in days gone by conducted their daily trading in the general stores, the Trade Museum will tell you all you need to know.

Selvíkurviti - Summer Destination
The lighthouse is accessible by a hike. A sign "Ráeyri" indicates the direction to leave road No.76 at the south end of the fjord. At the end of the gravel road are options to park the car.

Grímsey Lighthouse
Grímsey is reachable by ferry or plane. A beautiful walk along the south coast of the island leads to the lighthouse in the east of Grímsey. Between the middle of April and middle of August, the puffins and other birds bread all around in the cliffs.

The lighthouse is easy to reach by car at the coast of the little village Svalbarðeyri close to Akureyri. A short walk follows the beautiful coast with amazing views to Akureyri and Eyjarfjörður.

Kópasker Lighthouse
A beautiful walk from the little village leads to the lighthouse with a good option to discover seals and rich birdlife. It is also possible to go by car, but please close the farmer's gate.

Hraunhafnartangi Lighthouse
A sign on the gravel road No. 870 indicates to the most northern point of the mainland of Iceland. A short walk follows the coast with a rich birdlife. The Arctic Circle lays just 3 km further north.

Raufarhöfn Lighthouse
A small road leads from the little village Raufarhöfn "The Arctic Circle Village" up to the lighthouse on steep cliffs. A picnic bench offers the option to enjoy food with spectacular views.

Fontur Lighthouse
The peninsula Langanes has the shape of a flying dug and the little lighthouse Fontur lays on the end of the beak in the far east end. The remote position needs its time to be discovered as the road is gravel and twisty - but so worth to go.

Raufarhöfn is the northernmost town on the Icelandic mainland, nestled on the eastern shore of Melrakkaslétta peninsula. Named after its natural harbor, Raufarhöfn was used for shipping from early on as mentioned in the sagas.

Grenivík
The township of Grenivík lies under the 1,173 metre high mountain Kaldbakur. There are many excellent routes up the mountain, but if you do not feel like tackling those, there are easier paths up Þengilhöfði, which is a 260 metre high mountain just south of Grenivík. But for those who want a really challenging climb there are Blámannshattur and Laufáshnjúkur, both in the surrounding area.

Akureyri
Whatever the time of year, Akureyri is a lively and energetic town, and home to around 20.000 inhabitants. It is by far the most densely populated community outside the Reykjavík area, and is the centre of trade, culture and services for the north of Iceland.

Grímsey is a green, grassy and particularly agreeable island, probably best known for its proximity to the Arctic Circle, which cuts across the island. Many visitors go there solely to step across that line, south to north.

Húsavík
Húsavík is the oldest settlement in Iceland, besides being the largest town in Þingeyjarsýsla district and the service centre for the surrounding area. The town is known for whale watching tours in Skjálfandi Bay and called the Whale Capital. Up to 23 species of whale, including the Blue Whale, as well as large colonies of puffins can be found in the bay.

Sauðárkrókur
Sauðárkrókur lies on the south west shore of the inner reaches of Skagafjörður fiord. Here you will find a variety of services on offer; exhibitions, museums, places of entertainment, shops, restaurants, accommodation, a hospital, workshops and garages, a sports ground, a beach volleyball pitch, a swimming pool etc.

Blönduós
Blönduós is the most populated town by Húnaflói and is located by Road nr. 1. Through the town, runs one of the country's glacial rivers, Blanda and in the middle is the small island Hrútey, one of the area's natural wonders. The island is protected and closed due to bird nesting from April 20th to the 20th of June, but for the rest of the year you can cross a walking bridge to the island and there you can discover hiking trails. The walk along Blanda down to the shore is particularly romantic, overlooking the sea to the beautiful Strandafjöll.

Kópasker is a fishing village on the eastern shore of Öxarfjordur fjord. The main economy is based on services to the farms in the area as well as fisheries. In Kópasker, the local museum at Snartarstaðir is worth visiting, as well as the Earthquake Center, describing the big Earthquake of 1976.

Svalbarðseyri is a village in the Svalbarðsströnd district on the eastern coast of Eyjafjörður. Svalbarðsströnd is a thriving agricultural area and in the village there is a long tradition of agricultural service and industry and there you also find a small boat maina. Tourism has been on the rise and today the main pilars of the economy are industry and service.

Árskógssandur is a small community situated on the shores of Eyjafjörður fiord, about 10 minutes by car from Dalvík and a short distance from the village of Hauganes. It is also the crossing point to Hrísey island, by the ferry Sævar.

The island of Hrísey is rightly known as Eyjafjörður's pearl of nature, and is renowned for its abundant birdlife. It lies out in the middle of the fiord and can be reached by the ferry, Sævar - a journey of about 15 minutes.

The gravel road 748 follows the coast north of the town Sauðárkrókur and ends at the amazing Grettislaug, one of the famous geothermal pools. A stony beach offers wonderful views to the island Drangey.

Borgarsandur Beach
East of the town Sauðarkrókur lays the beautiful black sand beach with dunes and marram grass. It is easy to park the car at the west end of the beach and take a walk to enjoy the view over Skagafjörður.

Fjallahöfn Beach
The road No.85 leaves the steep cliffs on the east side of Tjörnes peninsula and reaches the flat area of Öxafjörður. A small parking option left of the road offers the best opportunities to walk to the black sandy beach and enjoy great views along the endless beaches of Öxafjörður. Please don´t try to access the beach by car!

Hraunhafnartangi Beach - Summer Destination
Hraunhafnartangi and Rifstangi are the northernmost points of Iceland, at the edge of the arctic circle. A short walk follows the stony beach with rich birdlife and ends almost at the Polar Circle - it´s just 3 km further north!

Lambanes Beach - Summer Destination
The gravel road 869 discovers the peninsula Langanes. A beautiful beach near the farm sign to Ýtra-Lón Guesthouse is one of the rare sandy beaches which are not black in Iceland. A small birding house gives opportunities to observe the rich birdlife. But don´t miss to walk this beautiful beach!

Skálar Beach - Summer Destination
A beach with history! In the village of Skálar, you feel the memories of life in the old times. Here was a thriving village where the residents built their livelihoods on the fishing industry and you still can see the ruins. A gravel road leaves road No. 869 with a sign to Skálar.

Leave the village of Ólafsfjörður on its north end in direction "Kleifar" and you will reach the beautiful black sandy beach with invites to take a stop and walk the beach. Park your car carefully in a designated parking area or in the village and take a walk.

In the harbour of Dalvík, at its southern end, is a little wooden bridge over the rock dam and offers access to a beautiful black sandy beach that invites to take a walk until you reach the delta of the river Svarfaðardalsá. Take a rest in the dunes and observe the rich birdlife.

There is a short walk to the beach. For those who have swimsuits, it is ideal to take a dip in the ocean and soak in the hot tubs afterward.

Málmey Island
Málmey is an uninhabited island off the northern coast of Iceland, one of the three islands in the Skagafjörður bay, along with Drangey and Lundey. It is located on the east side of the bay. Málmey is a long and narrow island, about 4 km long and about 1 km wide, and it is narrower at both the northern and southern ends.

Flatey Island
Flatey is a beautiful island and an unforgettable experience to visit. You have the feeling time stops here or even goes back in history. Many residents in Húsavík have houses on Flatey, which though uninhabited since 1968, was once a lively village with a church, a schoolhouse, and a lighthouse. Residents slowly left once electricity began to arrive on the mainland. Spread flat, the island is rich in bird fauna, with over 30 different types of bird to watch, including among others Arctic Tern and the Puffins.

Just 4,5 nautical miles north of Húsavík is a small island called Lundey, what translates as Puffin Island.

Similar to its ancient predecessor, Stonehenge, this newly built monument (by Haukur Halldórsson) is like a huge sundial, aiming to capture the sun´s rays, cast shadows in precise locations and capture the light between aligned gateways.

Tindastóll Hike - Summer Destination
Leave the road No. 745 on a small road in direction mountains. There is a trail sign in the parking lot. The trail is marked and is 6 km long with an elevation gain of 650 m to walk up. The peak has a height of 795 m and offers stunning views over Skagafjörður. The hike is not possible in snowy condition.

Húsavíkurfjall Hike - Summer Destination
Park your car on the parking lot north of the town. It is a comfortable hiking route onto the mountain along a steep car track. On top of the mountain, you get an amazing view over Skjálfandi bay. The tour takes 2,5-3 hrs. for 6 km distance. The hike is not possible in snowy condition.

You can park your car at the campground of Ásbyrgi. Here starts the hiking route onto the high hill in the centre of Ásbyrgi. The route is 5 km long and takes about 1,5 hrs. The hike is not possible in snowy condition.

A small blue sign at road No. 85 indicates the direction to the parking area for Rauðanes. A panel gives some explanation about the hiking route and the area. Numerous beautiful rock formations, sea stacks and cliffs are found around the peninsula Rauðanes. An easy marked hike circuits the peninsula. The route is about 6 km long and takes 2,5 hrs. The hike is not possible in snowy condition.

Krossanesborgir Hike - Summer Destination
From Akureyri centre drive direction Reykjavík along the main road nr 1 for approx. 3 km. When entering the roundabout at the outskirts of town take the first exit into Óðinsnes street and after a short drive take the first exit to the left, entering Krossanesborgir parking. The nature reserve area Krossanesborgir consists of many rock formations, with 5-10 million years old basalt. Both vegetation and birdlife are rich and several marked paths invite to discover nature and wildlife. The hikes are not possible in snowy conditions.

Súlur Hike - Summer Destination
From Akureyri center drive up Súluvegur. Park the car at the parking lot at the end of Súluvegur. Go to the top of the parking and start walking along the tracks to the right, after crossing the little creek follow the sign to the right up to the hill and across the fence. The path is marked and is approx 5,3 km from the parking to the top of Súlur. Mt. Súlur is the landmark mountain of Akureyri. The mountain has two peaks. Syðri-Súla (South-Súla) is the higher one, 1213 m, but the one you reach first is the lower peak Ytri – Súla (Outer-Súla), is about 1200. From the peaks, there is a spectacular view of Eyjafjörðu fjord. The hike is not possible in snowy conditions.

Illugastaðir is a beautiful place at the westside of Vatsnes peninsula and offers stanning views over Húnaflói fjord and to the mountains of the Westfjords. Be aware that this place is not open before July!

This viewing point is placed on the south side of the old town of Blöndúos up on high cliffs and offers an open view to the North. Leave road No.1 into the old town and follow the blue sign for "viewing point".

In the old town of Blönduós on the south side of the river delta is a place called "Horn" at the coast. Some picnic benches even offer the option to enjoy some food during watching the northern lights.

Spákonufellshöfði Northern Lights Place
Leave road No.745 and drive into the little village of Skagaströnd to the harbor. North of the harbor is the small peninsula Spákonufellshöfði. Park your car best at the harbor and take a short walk to the shore of the peninsula to get the open view to the North.

Parking Crossroads to Grettislaug Northern Lights Place
North of the village Sauðárkókur is the crossroad of road No. 744 and 748. Here is a nice parking area offering a fantastic view to the North over the fjord Skagafjörður and its islands.

Höðahólar is a parking area beside road No. 76 and gives an amazing view to the island Malmey and is a perfect spot to see the northern lights. You can sit down on the benches and even enjoy some snacks.

Road No. 76 leaves Siglufjörður through a tunnel to the North. After the tunnel, a parking area offers perfect options to look at the northern lights. Don´t forget to turn your head around to see the dramatic mountain which rises up almost vertically.

Outside of the little village Raufarhöfn, the "Arctic Circle Village", is the Arctic Henge. Similar to its ancient predecessor, Stonehenge, this newly built monument is like a huge sundial, aiming to capture the sun´s rays, cast shadows in precise locations and capture the light between aligned gateways.
